Paint correction is the process of permanently removing very thin layers of paint via polishing to reveal a highly finished paint surface. In levelling the paint to remove a scratch you must cut the paint down to the level of the scratch. It’s important to understand there is only a very small amount of clear coat applied to factory finishes (around 40-50 microns - 1 micron is equal to a millionth of a metre!). This means chasing complete defect removal is neither wise nor safe for the long term integrity of the paint. Clear coat on modern vehicles is the only protection the base/colour coat has. Clear coat is also what gives your car it’s shine. The clear coat contains UV inhibitors which protect against fading, the issue is these UV inhibitors mostly reside in the upper third of the clear coat, meaning removing excessive amounts can lead to future failure.
